Check that your computer’s main volume is unmuted and set above 20%, verify your physical speaker or headphone power switch is on, and ensure this browser tab is not muted (look for a speaker icon on the browser tab strip, right-click, and verify it says "Mute tab" rather than "Unmute tab").
Sound plays from the right channel, but the left channel is completely silent
If using wired headphones, ensure the 3.5mm audio jack is firmly pressed all the way into the socket — a partially inserted plug commonly disconnects the left or right channel. On Windows or macOS, check your audio balance slider under Sound Settings to ensure balance is centered (50/50).
Sound plays from the left channel, but the right channel is completely silent
Inspect your physical cable connection and balance controls. If using wireless Bluetooth earbuds, check if the right earbud has battery charge or try returning both earbuds to the charging case for 5 seconds to re-sync stereo pairing.

440 Hz (standard concert pitch A4) is a clean, universally recognizable mid-range frequency that is easily audible on all sound hardware — from smartphone speakers and laptop audio to studio monitors — without causing piercing treble discomfort or inaudible sub-bass roll-off.
Can this test tell if my speaker hardware is physically blown or damaged?
The browser Web Audio API can verify that your operating system dispatches audio signals to your sound card and routes them to your left and right channels. However, the browser cannot listen back to the acoustic sound produced in the physical room. If a tone sounds rattling, buzzing, or distorted to your ears, that indicates potential mechanical cone damage.
Why did no permission prompt appear for this speaker test?
Playing audio output through your speakers does not expose private user data, unlike accessing your camera or microphone. As a result, web browsers do not require permission prompts to play audio, provided the playback is initiated by an explicit user click.
Why can’t I choose my specific output device in some browsers?
The ability for a website to direct audio to a specific output device is powered by the setSinkId browser API. While supported in Chromium-based browsers (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera), it is not currently supported in Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari due to browser engine implementation choices. No. The 440 Hz test tone is synthesized 100% locally in your device’s memory using the native Web Audio API OscillatorNode. DeviceChecker never transmits, streams, or logs any audio data.
Does this test work on smartphones (iPhone and Android)?
Yes. Both iOS Safari and Android Chrome support Web Audio API tone synthesis and stereo panning. However, keep in mind that many smartphones have asymmetric speakers (e.g., a bottom-firing loudspeaker and a front-facing earpiece) which naturally produce different volume levels and frequency responses.
