Browser-based mouse diagnostics follow a strict honesty model: JavaScript can verify when electrical signals and scroll pulses reach the browser, but cannot diagnose unobserved hardware directly.

What Confirmed (Green) Means

  • The button or wheel completed a verified browser event cycle.
  • The microswitch or encoder successfully closed its electrical circuit.
  • Your OS driver and browser dispatched the pointer event without interruption.

What Untested (Gray) Means

  • The browser simply has not observed that specific mouse event.
  • It may mean you haven’t attempted that action yet during this session.
  • Or the button switch has physical contact fatigue or severed wiring.
  • Or software (like trackpad drivers or gaming suites) has reassigned the button.

Mouse registers an accidental double-click on a single click
This is the classic "microswitch chatter" defect caused by oxidized or fatigued copper leaf springs inside the button switch. Test your mouse on another computer to rule out software; if the issue persists, the switch contacts require cleaning with electrical contact cleaner or replacement.
Right-click or middle-click does not register on the test pad
Verify whether gaming mouse software (such as Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, or SteelSeries GG) has rebound that button to an application shortcut or macro. On laptop trackpads, confirm that multi-finger tap gestures are enabled in your operating system touch settings.
Scroll wheel jumps erratically, stutters, or reverses direction
The rotary encoder inside the scroll wheel frequently accumulates lint, hair, or dust. Disconnect the mouse and blow compressed air into the seam around the wheel while spinning it vigorously. If the encoder is optical, cleaning will usually resolve erratic jumping.
Mouse cursor lags, stutters, freezes, or skips across the screen
Check the optical sensor lens on the underside of the mouse for stray hairs or dust particles. For wireless mice, replace or recharge the battery and eliminate 2.4 GHz radio interference by plugging the USB wireless dongle into a front port away from USB 3.0 external storage drives.

Middle-click activates browser autoscroll or opens new tabs unexpectedly
Browsers assign default actions to middle-clicks on web links and general page areas. Inside our interactive test pad, autoscroll is suppressed to permit diagnostic testing, but clicking outside the pad will invoke normal browser tab and scroll behavior.

No browser-based tool can inspect the physical circuitry or mechanical leaf spring of your mouse switch directly. The browser reliably detects when an electrical switch event reaches the operating system and is dispatched to the page. If a button consistently fails to register after multiple clicks across different surfaces and applications, that strongly indicates a failing switch, cable fault, or driver conflict.
What is mouse switch chatter or the double-clicking fault?
Mechanical mouse buttons rely on tiny metal leaf springs inside microswitches (such as Omron or Kailh switches). Over time, metal fatigue, dust, or electrical oxidation causes the spring contacts to "bounce" when clicked, firing two or more electrical pulses within milliseconds. While operating systems attempt to debounce these pulses, severely degraded switches will register unintended double-clicks on single presses.
How do I test the middle click on a laptop trackpad?
Most modern laptop trackpads lack a dedicated physical middle button. On Windows Precision Trackpads, tapping the touchpad with three fingers typically dispatches a middle-click (button 1) event. Why does my scroll wheel scroll in the opposite direction?
Both Windows and macOS include "Natural Scrolling" or "Reverse Scroll Direction" options designed to match touchscreen gestures. When enabled, rolling the wheel down scrolls content up.
